Chlorinated Paraffin’s (CP) are Processed from Chlorination of araffins of following Paraffin range:
  • Chlorination of Paraffin range C10 – C14
  • Chlorination of Paraffin range C13 – C17
  • Chlorination of Paraffin range C 9 – C23
  • Chlorination of Paraffin range C14 – C17
Based on base of Paraffin range varieties of Chlorinated Paraffin are processed which vary in volatile loss, Thermal stability, viscosity, refractive index, free mineral acidity, and colour. PH of Chlorinated Paraffins are in range of 6.0 and free Chlorine is Nil.

Shiva Group of industries are processing Paraffins for Chlorinated Paraffins as follows.

Shiva Super

These are processed from Paraffins range of C10 – C14 and Paraffin range of C13 – C17 and are named as:

  • SHIVA SUPER Chlorinated Paraffin NP base (CNP)
  • SHIVA SUPER Chlorinated Paraffin HNP base (CHNP)
  • Further each varieties are Processed based on percentage of Chlorine which is as under

    Type
    Gravity at 27ºC
    App Chlorine content
    Shiva Super (CNP) LV
    1.28 to 1.3
    52.-53%
    Shiva Super (CNP) HV
    1.38 to 1.4
    58-60%
    Shiva Super (CNP) EHV
    1.45 to 1.48
    63-65% Min
    Shiva Super (CHNP) LV
    1.26 to 1.28
    51-52%
    Shiva Super (CHNP) HV
    1.36 to 1.38
    57-58%

Further Chlorination of Paraffin range of C14- C17 also can be done but sufficient time is to be given for chlorination since base C14- C17 of paraffin range is to be imported.

Chlorination of Paraffin range C9 - C23 involves Paraffin of imported origin from South Africa and it also contains some isochain in carbon structure and are cheaper varieties and mostly are used in reprocessed and inferior grade PVC formulations.

These Paraffins are of high viscosity, comparatively low thermal stability and slightly in colour for HV grade . Shelf life is limited as compared to Shiva Super grade.
The principal difference between Shiva Super & Polychlor Chlorinated Paraffins is low degree of branching in the normal Paraffin skelton versus random branching in the Paraffin range C9- C23 . This results in advantages in heat stability and viscosity for the unbranched material..

These available products allow the vinyl formulating chemist or compounder to select material of carbon chain length ranging from about C9 to as high as C23 .The chlorination level is normally 45% to 65%. These materials can be used as high as 30-35% replacement of DOP. Now a days compounder processes PVC even with out use of DOP /DBP with Chlorinated Paraffins as Plasticizer. Some compounder even use DBP in addition to Chlorinated Paraffins in different ratio depending upon economy and applications.

Cyclic hydro carbons are usually residue products. They may be derivatives of aromatic residues that may have been subjected to hydrogenation or alkylation .

These secondary Plasticizers are mainly used for reducing cost and hence other characteristics like heat, light stability or high volatility and compatibility shall be assessed for particular application.

Since most of paraffins are derivatives of Linear alkylene Benzene process and are dependent on quality of kerosene used in processing of normal paraffins, their specifications are indicative and variation is quite possible based an composition of Paraffin range.
